Cobb County Commuter Rail Alternatives Analysis

The Cobb County Commuter Rail Alternatives Analysis (AA) is a study to develop a locally preferred alternative (LPA) for the Northwest corridor extending from Acworth to the Arts Center Station. Efforts to address premium transit within this corridor date back to the mid1990s beginning with Cobb County's Multimodal Strategic Plan for Public Transportation in 1994 and later to the 2001 Northwest Corridor Light Rail Transit Implementation Study.

In 2003, the Northwest Connectivity Study was conducted, and, in more recent years, a consortium of local government agencies and transit operators developed a regional plan for transit, known as Concept 3. The Town Center Area Community Improvement District has been an active partner in these efforts, underscoring an understanding of the importance of such an infrastructure investment in our community.

The AA will offer a detailed analysis, focusing on the effects of alternative solutions to the corridor's transportation issues. The costs, benefits and impacts of each alternative will provide a sound technical basis for project decision-making. At the conclusion of the AA, local officials will select a preferred mode and general alignment, adopt a plan for financing the project's capital and operating costs and request FTA's approval to enter preliminary engineering. This is arguably the most critical phase of project development and implementation.
